  • Descriptive Notes

Book is xxxi + 329 pp. A bilingual collection of Borges' poems from several previous books, with English versions facing the Spanish originals, provided by a dozen different translators. The main contents are preceded by a Foreword by Borges (xv-xvi) and an Introduction by di Giovanni (xvii-xxviii). The volume contains translations of most other poems written by Borges around the same time that engage with Old English literature or early English history.

The text of "Composición escrita en un ejemplar de la gesta de Beowulf" begins:

A veces me pregunto qué razones
Me mueven a estudiar sin esperanza
De precisión, mientras mi noche avanza,
La lengua de los ásperos sajones. (154)

    And it ends:

Más allá de este afán y de este verso
Me aguarda inagotable el universo. (154)
