A sonnet about the choice to study Old English as loss of sight progresses. "Bowulf" in the title as originally printed (1961) is corrected to "Beowulf" here, and this text is the basis of subsequent appearances.
The poem begins:
A veces me pregunto qué razones
Me mueven a estudiar sin esperanza
De precisión, mientras mi noche avanza,
La lengua de los ásperos sajones. (243)
And ends:
Más allá de este afán y de este verso
Me aguarda inagotable el universo. (243)
