Book is ix + 501 pp.; illus. The book to which this record pertains, containing "Beowulf (Beinenwolf)," is vol. 2 of the 1st edition of Wägner's Nordisch-germanische Vorzeit, whose 2 volumes are separately titled:
Nordisch-germanische Götter und Helden
Deutsche Heldensagen erzählt für Jugend und Volk
A WorldCat record (see OCLC accession no. in Authentication, below) for this 1878 edition lists the volume's contents, indicating that this 1st edition does contain "Beowulf" and that it does not contain "Herzog Ernst," which Wägner's Vorwort to the the 2nd edition mentions as an addition at that time. This WorldCat record and the statements in the foreword of the 2nd edition are accepted as mutually confirming, but the 1st edition has not been seen in the writing of this entry.
For sample passages of text, see the separate entry for the 1881 2nd edition. The text was likely unaltered from this 1st edition, judging by comparison of the 2nd edition with the 1883 English translation of the 1st edition (see Relationships, above).
Not in Fry, GR, MO1, and MO2. This book, in both its original 1878 edition and its 1881 2nd edition, contains a different version of Wägner's story from another 1881 book by him that they include (under an incorrect title).
The information given here is from Wägner's statements in the Vorwort of the 2nd edition (1881), combined with the WorldCat record at OCLC accession no. 731118617, which lists the contents of the 1st edition.
