    Descriptive Notes

I believe the book by Wilhelm Wägner allegedly titled Deutsche Heldensagen für Schule und Haus (1881) to be a bibliographic ghost, originating in a error in writing the title of Wägner's Deutsche Heldensagen für Schule und Volk (Leipzig: Otto Spamer, 1881). It is given its own entry here, and not merely treated as correction of an error in the real book's title, because it has by now left a sizable bibliographical footprint: reference to it has been repeated in Fry, MO1, GR, and MO2, and it has also been given a WorldCat record (OCLC accession no. 887361083, still in error as of February 24, 2022).

The WorldCat record cited above lists a single library holding this book, in Solothurn, Switzerland. The Zentral-Bibliothek Solothurn has provided me with digital images from the individual copy of the book that is referenced, and I have confirmed visually that its title ends … für Schule und Volk, not … für Schule und Haus.

Wägner did include a Beowulf story in Deutsche Heldensagen für Schule und Volk (1881), and that is the intended target of the citations in Fry, GR, MO1, and MO2. See the separate entry for the story as printed in that book.
