    Descriptive Notes

    cxc + 497 pp. Identified as the 4th edition of F. Klaeber's Beowulf and the Fight at Finnsburg, whose last-revised version of the 3rd edition appeared in 1950. Includes a very full introduction (xxiii-cxc), commentary on Beowulf, text of The Fight at Finnsburg with introduction to and commentary on that poem, glossary, and Works Cited. Damico's Foreword (vii-ix) concisely describes the history of Klaeber's great edition and particularly the conditions in which its 1936, 1941, and 1950 iterations were produced. This re-editing by Fulk, Bjork, and Niles is often informally known as "Klaeber 4." A corrected reprint was issued in 2009.

    The Beowulf text begins:

    Hwæt, wē Gār-Dena     in ġeārdagum,
    þēodcyninga     þrym ġefrūnon,
    hū ðā æþelingas     ellen fremedon.

    Oft Scyld Scēfing     sceaþena þrēatum,
    monegum mǣġþum     meodosetla oftēah,
    eġsode eorl[as],     syððan ǣrest wearð
    fēasceaft funden.     Hē þæs frōfre ġebād:
