    Descriptive Notes

Duration not printed but is believed to be 18:59. 3 vinyl records (78 rpm), with The Lament for Beowulf on sides 1-5 (sequenced as side A of disc 1, side A of disk 2, sides A-B of disc 3, and side B of disc 2). The final side, side B of disc 1, is a work by a different composer, "Prologue" from Dance Suite by Spencer Norton.

This is believed to be the first recording of Hanson's Lament for Beowulf, of 3 known. The next was also made by the Eastman-Rochester Symphony Orchestra, with the Eastman School of Music Chorale (note variant of name), possibly in 1958, and the third by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra with the Seattle Symphony Chorale in 1991. Besides naming the choir differently, the two recordings by the Eastman-Rochester Symphony Orchestra apparently are differentiated by their durations. A 2009 CD release by the German label Valis, which is stated to be drawn from this 78-rpm record set, attests the duration of this first version as 18:59 (and also indicates original recording date of 1944, that information of unknown authority); see separate entry.

    Notes on Prior Documentation

This is the recording and 78-rpm vinyl record release documented by MO1 (p. 164) as having the publisher's catalog number "VM 889." On the records of which I have seen digital images, the labels for the 6 sides read "DM 889-1" through "DM 889-6." It is possible that "VM" numbers as reported by Osborn were a variant series also used by the publisher.
