Duration 18:59. Track 7 of 8 on 1 compact disc. Hanson's 1925 Lament for Beowulf is now grouped with his Symphony No. 1 ("Nordic") and Symphony No. 2 ("Romantic"), and with a work listed as Prologue. The Lament for Beowulf is identified in the track listing as from "victor 78 records set" (quoted from an image of the CD's printed matter posted on Discogs.com).
"Prologue" is an excerpt from Dance Suite by a different composer, Spencer Norton. The "Prologue" to Dance Suite was used as a filler of the 6th side (on a set of 3 78rpm vinyl records) in the earliest published recording of Hanson's Lament for Beowulf. Valis has absorbed that recording whole-cloth into this new compilation, without attribution to the composer of "Prologue," as is shown by the printed track listing's identification of "Prologue" as a "bonus on the same victor 78 records set" (quoted from the same image linked above).
The same annotations that prove this to be a reproduction of the early recording give its original date as 1944—on what ultimate authority is unknown.
