Duration 4:05:10. A set of 4 LP records (8 sides) with an accompanying book of i + 171 pp. that prints the Old English text en face with the Donaldson prose translation. Donaldson is credited for the printed translation, but the editor of the Old English text (from which Malone reads) is not; it appears to be a very slight modification of the 1958 edition of Wrenn, occasionally showing different decisions, presumed here to be Malone's own, about restoration of damaged words. (It is closer to Wrenn than to Klaeber, Wyatt, or Wyatt rev. Chambers, the other main editions in circulation at the time.) The box cover art is a vivid blue and yellow woodcut of Beowulf grappling with Grendel by Matsubara, who is not credited anywhere on the box or in the book, but whose signature (as "Naoko Matsubara 直") is legible.

Malone's oral reading is entirely in Old English, apart from a Modern English statement (beginning at 14:28 of side 6) in which he explains that the part of the manuscript containing the text of the thief's intrusion into the dragon's barrow is badly damaged and that lines 2212-231a must be skipped.
