  • Descriptive Notes

    A broadside presenting a translation of Beowulf, lines 88-98, inscribed "For William Alfred" beneath the title, and with a small blue image of a tree at the top right beside the title and dedication. Issued in January 1999 in a limited edition of 95 total copies. Publication and limitation statement in light blue ink at the foot:

    This translation of Beowulf, lines 88-98, was printed by Katherine McCanless at the Bow & Arrow Press, Adams House, Harvard University. The edition of 75 numbered copies and 20 lettered artists proofs was produced during the winter of 1999. (italics as in original; "artists" sic)

    Heaney would revise the text very slightly as he incorporated these lines into the final version of his 1999 translation.

    The text reads in full:

    Listen: the din of the loud banquet
    Every day in the hall, the harp being struck
    And the clear song of a skilled poet
    Telling with mastery of man's beginnings—
    How the Almighty made the earth
    A gleaming plalin girdled with waters;
    In His splendour He set the sun and the moon
    To be earth's lamplight, lanterns for men,
    And filled the broad lap of the world
    With branches and leaves; and quickened life
    In every other thing that moved. (italics as in original)

    Notes on Prior Documentation

    Not mentioned specifically in MO2, but MO2 1987(c) references Heaney's "many other fragmentary translations" in advance of his 1999 full translation.
