Book is xi + 107 pp. "Bēowulfes sīþ" is a neo-Old English prose rewrite of the Grendel and Grendel's mother portions of the Beowulf story in the style of a folktale. In many respects it is the antecedent of Tolkien's Sellic Spell (q.v.). The text is offered as an aid to students learning Old English and is supported by explanatory notes on pp. 85-107. The book was reprinted in 1925 and 1938.

The tale begins:

[heading] Be Hrōþgāre, Dęna cyninge.

91. Hit ġelamp ġēo þæt ān cyning wæs on Dęnum, sē wæs hāten Hrōþgār. And se Hrōþgār wæs mǣre hęretoga, swā þæt his māgas him ġeorne ġehīerdon, oþ-þæt his folgoþ wēox þearle, and hē hæfde siġe swā hwider swā hē ēode, ǣġþer ġe on sǣ ġe on lande.

92. And sōna swā hē tō rīċe fēng, swā ġesamnode hē miċle fierd, and his fīend ġesohte on hira āgnum landum, and hīe swīþe for᛫slōg and for᛫dyde, oþ hīe ealle unġemetliċne ęġe fram him hæfdon. (p. 39)

And ends:

246. Þā on᛫gann se cyning hine ġeorne befriġnan hū him on þǣm sīþe ġelamp. And Bēowulf him þæt eall sweotollīċe sæġde. And þā hē his sprǣce ġeęndod hæfde, þā sealde hē þǣm cyninge þā bętstan þāra māþma þe hē him mid brohte; and hē sealde sume þā māþmas þǣre cwēne, sume his frēondum and māgum. And hīe ealle þāra ġiefena fæġnodon.

247. And se cyning weorþode Bēowulf miċlum ġe mid fēo ġe mid landāre. And Bēowulf þurh᛫wunode siþan on þǣm mǣstum ġesǣlþum and on þǣre mǣstan weorþunge. (p. 67)
