    Descriptive Notes

    v + 137 pp. Reproduces, with new punctuation, the Old English text from Bruce Mitchell and Fred C. Robinson, eds., Beowulf: An Edition, with Relevant Shorter Texts (1998). The text of the poem is preceded by a lengthy introduction (1-30) explaining the rationale and principles of the punctuation system used, and is followed by a bibliography and a list of topics discussed in the introduction and notes.

    Mitchell and Robinson had included in their 1998 edition an appendix more briefly outlining this punctuation system and giving a 114-line sample of text done according to it. The same 114 lines, as presented in Mitchell and Irvine's full version here, differ slightly in punctuation from that trial effort.

    The text begins:
