    Descriptive Notes

Note: The 2004 printing references its language as "Chinese," but as indicated below, at a later time Mantra Lingua began referring to it as "Cantonese." A 2019 reprint refers to its own language as "Cantonese" and I can find no textual difference from the 2004 book, but it has been given a different ISBN (9781844440252 [the addition of the prefix 978- is trivial, but the final digit also differs]).

32 pp. (unpaginated); color illus. Bilingual prose text on each page tells Beowulf's story up to his return to Geatland. This is one of many versions of a bilingual picturebook pairing Barkow's English text with a translation of it into another language. As of 8/15/19, the Mantra Lingua online catalog lists the following 17 languages available: Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Farsi, French, German, Gujarati, Italian, Mexican Spanish, Panjabi, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, and Urdu (http://usa.mantralingua.com/product-type/Book?combine=beowulf). Some of the printed books, in a statement on the back cover, additionally list Czech and "Serbo-Croatian" among available languages, and refer to "Chinese" rather than "Cantonese."

    The text begins:

    Did you hear that?

They say that if there is too much talking and laughter, Grendel will come and drag you away. You don't know about Grendel? Then I suppose you don't know about Beowulf either. Listen closely and I will tell you the story of the greatest Geat warrior and how he fought the vile monster, Grendel. ([4])

    And ends:

After a few days Beowulf and his men prepared to set sail for their homeland. Laden with gifts and a friendship between the Geats and the Danes they sailed away for their homes.

And what became of Beowulf, the greatest and noblest of Geats? He had many more adventures and fought many a monster.

But that is another story, to be told at another time. ([32])
