  • Descriptive Notes

Book is xi + 195 pp. The book's main content—a collection of translations of Old English poetry by various translators—is preceded by a preface by Cook (iii-viii) and is followed by a select bibliography (172-73), the appendix described below giving samples of prior Beowulf translations (175-77), and several other short appendices and indexes (178-95).

This appendix collects short segments (ranging from 5 to 15 lines) of Beowulf translation by Wackerbarth, J. Lesslie Hall, Lumsden, Garnett, Morris and Wyatt, and Longfellow. It is presented not as a paratext to the longer Beowulf extracts by Tinker given earlier in the anthology (see separate entry), but as a separate contribution to this book to indicate various poetic styles that have been attempted by translators, and so has its own database entry.

All of these extracts other than Longfellow's represent lines 2913-20 of the Old English. For Longfellow, Cook and Tinker give his rendering of lines 217-24a.
